First up – Melissa! As our Patient Care Coordinator, Melissa is involved in every aspect of your aesthetic surgery journey. Read on to find out what makes her tick!
Hi, Melissa! Can you tell us more about your background? What led you to the field of medical aesthetics?
I started out in the nursing program at Fanshawe College, then moved on to the Personal Support Worker course. I worked in Community Living for four years, supporting adults with developmental disabilities. It was incredibly rewarding, but it wasn’t where I saw myself long term. I then met a plastic surgeon in 2009 and fell in love with the cosmetic industry. After speaking to a few people who worked in the field, I knew this was the industry for me. In April of 2009 I started working as a patient consultant and loved helping and supporting people as they went on their journey.
What does a typical day at the clinic look like for you?
In a busy, high-paced office like ours, our days are filled with answering questions and alleviating concerns. Patients put trust in us to coordinate and schedule their procedures in a timely manner and ensure that their experience comes with minimal stress and anxiety. Most of our patients are incredibly excited about their journey, but the unknown to them is where I come in – to change the “unexpected” to “I was informed about this.”
What’s your favourite thing about your role?
I truly love the intimate interaction and relationships that are established with all of our patients. It brings me great joy to see how patients transform not only physically, but also mentally and emotionally. I get so excited to see the joy in their faces at their follow ups.
You have extensive experience working with surgical patients – how has this helped you to provide outstanding care in your role here?
Given my experience in the last 11 years, I feel that I offer a wealth of knowledge and a true understanding of the concerns that patients have surrounding their procedures. I also have spent many hours in the operating room observing each different procedure – this allows me to explain in detail to the patients what will occur during their operation. For me, it’s about sharing my knowledge with patients.
What’s your favourite skincare product?
Almost a year ago I was introduced to SkinBetter Science, and I absolutely love the entire line. I have used Botox and fillers over the years and have always been diligent with facial peels and other non-surgical treatments – however when I started using SkinBetter, I found that I could reduce the number of facial peels I needed as my skin had a wonderful glow! What do you love to do when you’re not on the job?
Being a busy mother of three boys, we spend our time keeping busy with lacrosse and hockey. I enjoy cooking and spending time with close friends, cottaging, spending time on the water and traveling with my family.
