Why is retinol good for your skin?

Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A, part of a class of compounds known as retinoids. It works by inducing surface skin cells to turn over and die rapidly, in order to make way for new cell growth. Retinols slow down collagen breakdown and thicken the deeper layers of the skin where wrinkles begin. They can also help slough off and curb production of melanin, leaving behind a more even skin tone. It may take 3-6 months of daily use to see visible change.

The result is increased collagen and radiance, along with improved skin tone, fine lines, wrinkles, and aging prevention.

How to start using retinol:

• Start with the weakest strength of retinol first and build your way up (i.e. 0.25, 0.5, 1.0 etc). Shop our favourite retinol serums here.

• If you have very sensitive skin, try using 0.25 mixed with your moisturizer as a starting dose.

• Only use retinol at night.

• Start with weekly applications, then increase to twice a week, until you comfortably reach daily use without irritation.

• Cleanse skin first, apply a pea sized amount, then finish with moisturizer.

• Do not use in combination with other skincare products that contain benzoyl peroxide, sulfur, resorcinol, or salicylic acid as this may cause irritation.

• Common side effects: burning, warmth, stinging, tingling, itching, redness, swelling, dryness, and peeling.

• Discontinue use and seek medical attention if you experience hives, severe swelling, and/or difficulty breathing.

• If irritation occurs, lower your dose and/or decrease frequency of use.

• Avoid sun exposure and wear an SPF during the day as retinols can increase sun sensitivity.
